Walk into a room with tall, crisp baseboards and matching door casing and it feels finished, even before the furniture is in. Trim is often the detail people notice without knowing why.
Start with scale. Taller ceilings can carry taller baseboards and wider casing. In a room with standard eight-foot ceilings, very tall baseboards can feel heavy, while a skinny baseboard in a large, open room can look unfinished.
Match the style of the house. Simple, square-edged trim suits modern and farmhouse homes. Profiles with more detail suit traditional homes. Whatever you choose, keeping baseboards, door casing and window casing consistent is what ties the rooms together.
Decide on paint or stain. Painted trim is the most common choice and is easy to touch up. Stained wood trim can look beautiful next to wood floors and cabinets, but the tones need to work together.
Do it with your remodel. If you are updating floors, kitchens or bathrooms, it is the ideal time to replace baseboards and casing, because the old ones often have to come off anyway. New trim fitted to the new work sits tighter than old trim put back.
