Planning Custom Kitchen Cabinets: What to Decide First

September 8, 2026 CJ Woodwork LLC

The best part of custom cabinets is that they fit your kitchen instead of the other way around. The key is making a few decisions early, so the cabinets are planned around how you actually cook and live.

Start with how you use the space. Where do you prep food? Where do the dishes go after they are washed? Do you need a spot for small appliances, trash and recycling, or a pantry? Answering these first shapes the whole layout.

Measure the essentials. Wall lengths, ceiling height, window and door locations, and the size of your appliances all set limits on the design. Custom cabinets can use every inch, including the awkward gaps stock cabinets leave behind.

Choose your storage. Deep drawers for pots and pans, pull-outs for spices, tall pantry cabinets and cabinets that reach the ceiling all add storage without adding floor space.

Pick a style and finish. Shaker doors, flat slab doors and raised-panel doors each give a kitchen a different feel. Painted and stained finishes should work with your countertops and your floors.

Plan the order of work. If new flooring or other trades are part of the remodel, decide early what goes in before or after the cabinets, so everything lines up.
